Mass Youth Soccer Academy - 1v1 and 2v1 Attacking
COACHING POINTS: When taking on the 1st Defender the 1st Attacker will have bent knees, the ball close to his or her dribbling foot and be balanced. He or she will execute a feint or combination of feints to unbalance the 1st Defender and dribble behind him or her. Players who are dribbling past an opponent should dribble past them with the foot furthest from the defender. Help players to recognize when they should take people on…1v1, and when they shouldn’t 1v2. Assist players in recognizing when to dribble at speed (there’s open space ahead), and when to slow down (they need to make decisions, execute a cross or shot, or are getting closer to opponents). When combining with the 2nd Attacker to beat the 1st Defender review the coaching points for week 7 the Wall Pass, overlap and takeover. Players must learn how to "go past" the defender with a feint or "push and run" burst of speed, or turn away from multiple defenders using a turn.
1) Free Dribbling. In a grid the size of a basketball court players are free dribbling and practicing their favorite feints. Select four different feints and have the players introduce them to the group. Spend about 10 minutes practicing these feints and stretch in between each one. Remind the players feints are used to beat a defender 1v1 and must be sold. The attacker must make the defender think on thing is going to happen and do something else! Whether it is to dribble by the defender or pass to a target. (5 Minutes)
2) 2v1 continuous keep-away. In a grid 10x15 yards, three players with different colored vests play 2v1 continuous keep-away. Two attackers combine to keep the ball away from one defender. When the defender wins the ball, he or she immediately combines with the attacker he or she did not win the ball from and the attacker who lost the ball becomes the defender. Balls out of play are dribbled in or passed in (5 minutes)
3) 1v1 to lines. In a grid 10x15 yards two players play 1v1 and try to score by beating the defender and dribbling over the line opposite them. They play toward the ten-yard lines and use their favorite feints. When the ball goes out of bounds it is dribbled in. Switch partners between grids every 2-3 minutes. (14minutes)
4) 1v1 to targets. In a grid 10x15 yards four players, two with vests and two without (see diagram) will try to score goals by passing the ball to their target on the 10yard line. In this game players in possession are looking for the target to show for the through ball. Target players must constantly move along the 10-yard line to show for the ball. After a score or when a ball is out of play the game is restarted from the end line by the ball being passed in to the team that should have possession. Switch roles after five minutes and play two rounds. (14 minutes)
5) 3v3 Two Zone game. In a grid 20x30 yards with a midfield line and two small goals three feet wide in the center of each of the 20-yard lines. (see diagram) Each team must have two players in the attacking half and one in the defensive half at all times (creating 2v1), but players can switch positions as the game dictates. No player can play goalkeeper and balls out of play are dribbled in or passed in. (20 minutes)
6) Review 1v1 and 2v1 attacking.
