Plan 7: Ball skills – dribbling/passing/shooting
1. Warm-up
Game name “Hit the Coach”
Always a crowd favorite!
Organization / area - Half field
Number of players / balls - All children with one ball each
Activity description:
Dribbling, kicking & teaches the Coach how to be funny…Players stand shoulder-to-shoulder facing Coach who is about 5 steps away. On "Go", the Coach runs slowly away while players dribble to chase him/her & try to hit the coach with the ball by shooting at him/her. They get 1 point each time they hit the coach. Recruit parents to help & split into 2 games or even 3, so it is less crowded.
When the kids get 5 points – the coach will do something funny…sing a song, make an animal noise, do jumping jacks,
Stay in a small area & have fun with this game
Play for about 5 minutes to warm up
2. Game #1
Game name “Monster Invasion”
Remember, we scare because we care!
Organization / area - Half-field
Number of players / balls - All players with a ball.
Activity description:
Tell the players that a Monster is coming to try to steal their pet ball and that they must keep it away from the Monster by dribbling it around the field (tell them they must stay inside the field). The Coach or a parent is the monster. Ideas: drag your leg like Frankenstein, make monster noises, make a face, and say things like "Don't let me get your ball!!" But don't actually scare them. The idea is just to have them try to get away.
Progressions: Choose different monsters for each game – “evil coach”, “scary dads”, “Mummys – walk with arms extended”, “Vampires”
- Progress to when their ball is touched they must do a quick skill to run around again i.e. – Bounce the ball off their knee, hop over their ball 3 times, dribble it to the “hospital” (small area marked by cones, where the doctor makes them better)
3. Game #2
Game name “Clean-up that Room!”
Organization / area - Half-field - 3 areas 1 team on left, 1 team on right, neutral area in middle
Number of players / balls - All players with a ball – 2 teams with equal # of players
Activity description:
Create a 'neutral area' between the two teams where no player is allowed into.
Each player starts with a ball at his / her feet. On command, each team tries to keep their side of the game free of balls by kicking their ball over to the other teams side. After an appropriate amount of time (when the balls become too scattered, or, the players are losing focus), call the game and count which side has the most balls on their side. Restart
Progressions - Players can only use their left foot. Punt the ball back.
4. End with Game (20 mins)
3 v 3 dual sided - split teams 3 player on the A field and 3 player on the B field. Subs sit in the middle of the fields. Parents sit on the outside of the fields. Coaches can be on the field encouraging players but please refrain from shouting instructions. Just let them play !
5. Don't forget the Team Cheer !
Potato Chip, Potato Chip, Munch, Munch, Munch, Who do we think is a very fine bunch ! HORNETS YEAH !
